At Ramsgate Sailing School, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Whether you're learning the ropes or already an experienced sailor, one thing remains the same safety at sea is non-negotiable.

As part of our annual safety checks, all the lifejackets onboard Elizabeth are serviced to ensure we remain “in code” and compliant with maritime safety regulations. This gives peace of mind to both our students and instructors… but what about your own lifejacket?

When Was the Last Time You Checked Your Lifejacket? 🤔

Many recreational sailors store their lifejackets away at the end of the season, assuming they'll be fine next time they head out. However, RNLI Ramsgate runs a free lifejacket clinic at the start of each season, and shockingly, up to 50% of lifejackets tested have faults.

That’s half of all lifejackets potentially failing in an emergency. Don’t let yours be one of them!

✅ How to Keep Your Lifejacket Safe & Functional:

  • Check the gas cylinder, is it properly fitted and not corroded?

  • Inspect the webbing and buckles for signs of wear and tear.

  • Make sure the auto-inflation system (if applicable) is in working order.

  • Look for leaks by inflating the jacket manually and leaving it overnight.

  • Store it somewhere dry and away from extreme temperatures.

If you’re unsure, bring it to the RNLI clinic and get it checked professionally, it could save your life.

Annual Safety Checks: More Than Just Lifejackets

Lifejackets are just one part of a much bigger safety picture. Onboard Elizabeth, we inspect, check, and renew essential safety equipment every year. If you’re a boat owner, you should too—because as the skipper, the safety of your crew is your responsibility.

Here’s What Should Be On Your Annual Safety Checklist:

🚤 Liferaft – Ensure it’s serviced and ready to deploy in an emergency.

🔥 Flares – Expired flares may not work when needed (and are illegal to have on board if you visit France). Check dates and replace as needed.

🧯 Fire Extinguishers – Are they still in date?

⚠️ Gas, Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms – Essential for detecting leaks early.

⛑ First Aid Kits – Bandages, seasickness tablets, and emergency medical supplies should all be in date and restocked if needed.

📻 VHF Radio & Emergency Communication – If you rely on a radio, EPIRB, or PLB, check batteries and test functionality before heading out.

Stay Safe, Stay Prepared

Many of these checks aren’t legally required for privately owned boats, but they are crucial for your safety. If you're responsible for a vessel, make a maintenance schedule and stick to it. A few minutes of checking your gear could make all the difference when it really matters.
